ICARUS
A POEM BY BEN PARKER - 8/2/17
don’t hang with the kids
that fly too close to the sun
don’t hang with the fakes
that believe they are the one
for you and your success
when beneath the surface
they're monsters
so Loch Ness
find a group that treats each kid
like their highness
not arrogant in their highness
from drugs consumed in local parks
hang with the kids
that don’t change after dark
or in the cold or the heat
people change over time
hang with those who grow
not those that decay
hang with the ones that need it now
not those that delay
your dreams and successes
those on the move that don't stay
stagnant
hang with those that can stray
and still keep contact
and pick up the phone
not those that make you feel vulnerable
whenever you're alone
or in trouble
make sure they've got your back
allow your friends to act as tools
as they help you build yourself
and not those that act as fools
some kids are so Jack and Jill
believing that they're on a hill
everytime they take a pill
when really its just another alley
and another tally of missed opportunities
to seal the day and be productive
its scary how powders and potions
can be so seductive
stay safe out there
and keep your friends close
all you need is friendship
there's no need to overdose
